CENTRALIA A former Geneva priest and convicted sex offender will remain in prison for two more months, following a board's decision that he violated the terms of his release from prison.

Mark Campobello, 43, was released on parole in February after serving about three years and eight months of an eight-year sentence for a sex abuse conviction. He pleaded guilty in 2004 to sexually abusing two girls while he was a priest at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva and a teacher at Aurora Central Catholic High School.

Last month, Campobello, who was living in Crystal Lake, took an approved "trip," but he made three additional stops along the way, according to Jorge Montes, chairman of the Prisoner Review Board. He added Campobello returned home on time.

Montes did not know where Campobello was headed or where he stopped.

Campobello's parole officer, who approved the trip with just two stops, filed the violation after learning of the additional stops, sending Campobello back into custody, Montes said. He first went to Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, but then was moved to downstate Centralia Correctional Center.

On Wednesday, three board members decided Campobello violated his parole but "decided Mr. Campobello should receive a fairly light sanction," Montes said.

"The board found that these were very minor violations," he said, adding that prosecutors declined to file criminal charges.

Campobello will remain in prison until July 8 and resume his parole, which would have ended in Feb. 13, 2012. Due to the additional time in prison, that date could change, Montes said.

The girls in the sex abuse case, now in their 20s, sued the Rockford Diocese and Campobello. A judge entered a default judgment against Campobello, who never responded to the lawsuit from prison. In May 2007, the diocese paid a $2.2 million settlement to the girls.
