BURLINGTON, Vt. — An attorney for a former altar boy has urged jurors to award him millions in compensatory and punitive damages for the suffering that he had endured at the hands of a priest.

John Evers told the eight-man, four-women jury in his closing arguments that the state's Roman Catholic diocese protected priests at the expense of children. He said the diocese still had not gotten the message about priests and bishops not being above the law and a big dollar verdict is needed to get the message across.

The plaintiff, a 40-year-old Lakewood, Colo., man, is a former altar boy at Christ the King Church in Burlington. He says that he was routinely groped by the Rev. Edward Paquette, who is not a defendant in the suit.
