The Diocese of Palm Beach offers these tips to parents: Do not insist that children hug or kiss relatives or friends.

Intervene if you see your children have been asked to do something that makes them uncomfortable.

Openly discuss sensitive issues. Beginning at age 13, parents should discuss rape, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

Teach children to know the difference between appropriate and inappropriate requests from adults.

Get to know adults who show up at places where children gather.

Do not allow children to go on vacation or spend the night with anyone but their parents.

Do not allow children to travel alone or to accept expensive gifts from adults.
