INDIANAPOLIS — The Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee doesn't want to create its own database to help churches identity sex offenders.

The convention is meeting in Indianapolis this week, and the committee's report calls sexual abuse reprehensible and a sin. But the committee says the Southern Baptist principle of local church autonomy means it's up to individual churches to take action against offenders.

Opening its two-day annual meeting, the nation's largest Protestant body also elected a new president, Georgia pastor Johnny Hunt.

Hunt says he'll try to unite Baptists around common causes and use his experience mentoring younger pastors to reach out to a younger generation.
