The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse today made public its decision to close Holy Family/St. Michael Church in Fulton.

That parish will merge with Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton and will be known as Holy Trinity Church.

Parishioners were informed of the decision today in a letter from Syracuse Bishop James Moynihan, and priests were to announce the decision during Masses at both churches this weekend.

The new church is part of a massive restructuring of the seven-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse that will eventually close at least 40 churches.

Sunday, two churches in Onondaga County -- Our Lady of Good Counsel in Warners and St. Peter in Syracuse -- will celebrate their final Masses. Two churches in the Southern Tier will close Aug. 17, and further announcements, mostly affecting Onondaga County churches, are expected soon.

Immaculate Conception, founded in 1854, is at 309 Buffalo St. Holy Family/St. Michael Church was founded in 2006 by the merger of Holy Family and St. Michael and is at 301 Beech St.
