David J. Nickerson, whose alleged confession to raping a Milwaukee altar boy in the 1980s set free a man who was wrongly convicted of the assault, was bound over for trial Monday.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim was 9 or 10 years old and a third-grader at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School on the south side.

Nickerson told police he was in charge of the altar boys, and that he had sexual relations with the boy in Milwaukee and later in Delaware, where Nickerson moved around 1988, the complaint says.

Nickerson said the boy stayed with him in Delaware for about a week, the complaint says.

The boy, now 31, knew Nickerson as "Brother Dave."

In 2006, after deliberating two hours, a jury convicted a different "Brother Dave" — David Sanders — of molesting the boy.

Sanders, who in the 1980s taught music at several Milwaukee-area parishes, was identified by the victim as his abuser and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Sanders spent eight months in jail and in prison before an old letter discovered by the victim's grandmother led investigators to Nickerson.
