Following a stormy meeting with a representative of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, members of St. Henry's Catholic Church packed up their sleeping materials and went home after being assured the church did not face an immediate closure.

Parishioners had come to the hour-long meeting, prepared to occupy the church in an effort to keep it open.

St. Henry's is one of about two dozen churches scheduled to be closed by the Archdiocese by the end of the year as part of a post-Katrina reorganization plan.

The church is scheduled to be closed and merged with two other churches, St. Stephen and Our Lady of Good Counsel. The Archdiocese says the move is necessary because of a shortage of priests.

Television news crews were asked to remain outside during the meeting by a spokesperson for the Archdiocese, Sarah Comiskey.

Members of St. Henry's say they have failed in repeated efforts to engage the Archdiocese and Archbishop Alfred Hughes in a discussion of possible alternatives to closing the church.

It's unclear whether church members will be given an opportunity to present their ideas to Archdiocesan officials.
