With less than two weeks until the start of Catholic World Youth Day, visa numbers are still well below expectations.

The official World Youth Day target for international visitors is 125,000, but the latest figures released from the Immigration Department today show about 65,000 visas have been approved for the festival.

The department expects another 20,000 will come to Australia through other methods like tourist visas, while 4,000 will come from New Zealand.

When the applications still being processed are taken into account, that is still 30,000 fewer people than the target.

But organisers of World Youth Day say they are confident the numbers will be reached with visitors who do not need to prearrange a visa.

They say 36 extra flights have been added to cope with the demand.
