A Sydney court has heard a Catholic priest sexually abused students at a Sydney boy's school.

Father Paul Evans is accused of abusing three students at a boarding school at Engadine in Sydney's south in the 1980s.

He has been charged with at least 20 child sex offences.

Evans told the court he was questioned by the school after a camping trip to Bundeena with a group of about 15 boys because some of them said he was gay.

When asked why they said it, Mr Evans replied it might have been because they were all sharing a tent and he might have put his hand on one of the boys.

He also said he took his shorts off to wash sand from them and some of the boys saw him do it.
