W. Francis Malooly, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, was named the new bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington this morning by Pope Benedict XVI.

He will replace Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, 75, who is retiring. Saltarelli has been bishop since 1996.

Malooly, who will take charge in September, was introduced today at a press conference in Wilmington.

Malooly, 64, said his top priority as the diocese's new bishop is to draw people back to the church, especially those who have been hurt – referring to the sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the church in recent years.

"I love being a priest – always have. I love ministering with and to people, and I'm happy about what I do," Malooly said. "We can't draw people to church if we are not happy about what we do."

Malooly was ordained to the priesthood on May 9, 1970 and was ordained a bishop on March 1, 2001.
