A man who was sexually assaulted by a Catholic priest says any apology from the pope to Australian victims of abuse will be pointless.

Anthony Jones wants Sydney's Cardinal George Pell to resign over his actions during a church investigation into his assault.

Cardinal Pell says there was no cover up of the case, and he has refused to stand down.

Papal apology useless

Mr Jones was sexually abused by father Terrence Goodall in 1982, and has since suffered two mental breakdowns.

Cardinal Pell wrote to Mr Jones in 2003, but now admits he was mistaken in writing that no one else had contacted the church with sexual abuse claims against father Goodall.

Cardinal pell admits the letter was badly worded and wrong.

Pope Benedict arrives in Sydney on Sunday for World Youth Day, and is widely expected to make an apology on behalf of clergy who have sexually abused Australians.

Meantime gay and lesbian Christians are planning to protest against the Pope's condemnation of homosexuality.

They'll gather at Sydney's Pitt Street Uniting Church on Sunday demanding equality for gay and lesbian followers of Christ.

Catholic writer and educator Michael Kelly says gay and lesbian people have be marginalised and condemned by mainstream churches, particularly the Catholic church.
