A review board with the Diocese of Davenport has determined that accusations of sexual abuse against 24 clergy members, including three from the Iowa City area, are credible.

The review board said the allegations were credible because they were more likely to have occurred, were corroborated with other evidence, or were acknowledged by the accused. The review, using an independent private investigator, was part of the Diocese's non-monetary undertakings of its bankruptcy proceedings.

Included among the clergy members named in a news release Thursday were Francis Bass, who was the lead pastor from January 1978 to August 1981 at St. Patrick's Church; William Wiebler, who served as an assistant pastor from August 1967 to August 1969 at St. Mary's; and Paul Deyo, a former teacher at the Regina Catholic Education Center in the 1990s.
