A FORMER Collaroy Plateau priest has denied fondling a teenager's genitals but admitted rubbing his neck to help him sleep while working at a school for troubled boys.

Paul Raymond Evans, who was a priest at St Rose of Lima Church at Collaroy Plateau, has pleaded not guilty to 20 serious child sex charges. The offences were allegedly committed against several pupils at Boys' Town at Engadine, in Sydney's south, between 1977 and 1988.

During that period Mr Evans worked as a dorm master and a staff member in charge of after-school activities.

While in the witness box at the Sydney District Court this week he admitted going into the bedroom cubicle of one of the boys and touching him.

"I did, yes," Mr Evans said. "Just in a small way as I have described with others to help them sleep.

"I sat them down, that would involve rubbing the back of his neck."

When asked if he ever fondled the boy's penis, Mr Evans replied: "Certainly not, no."

The case continues.
