A victim of childhood sexual abuse sues the Diocese of Wilmington claiming officials covered up the actions of a child abusing priest.

WDEL's Carl Kanefsky has the story.

Sixty year old Michael Schulte says not only was he abused by Francis DeLuca when he was a teenager, but he and his parents reported the incidents to the Diocese.

Schulte reported the abuse again in 1993 and 2002, with Diocese officials encouraging him to talk to a counselor at Catholic Charities.

His attorney Stephen Neuberger says the counselor called police when Schulte answered the counselor’s final question.

While the Diocese won't comment on this specific suit, the claim states officials have since admitted it had been institutional policy to transfer priests who sexually abused children, but Neuberger says red flags in DeLuca's background indicated he was unfit to even become a priest, and would be a danger to children.

The suit claims DeLuca was ordained anyway because of a longstanding shortage of priests.
