The Pope has been informed of current allegations of sexual abuse by the clergy but it remains unclear whether he will offer an apology to victims during his time in Australia, his spokesman says.

In the lead up to, and during, World Youth Day, the Catholic Church, and in particular, the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, have had to fend off allegations that cases of sexual abuse by priests were not handled appropriately.

At a press conference this afternoon, Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, said the pontiff's entourage had kept him abreast of recent developments.

"As I've said before on previous occasions, I would invite you to keep listening and following what the Holy Father's intention's are in terms of his program," Father Lombardi said.

"If he decides to speak about this it will be wisest to follow his words. He is obviously informed about this situation [by his staff]. The Holy Father is aware of the current news in Australia at the moment and let's listen to what he may have to say."

Father Lombardi appeared to indicate it was unlikely the Pope would meet with victims of sexual abuse by priests.

"I have been asked [this] question over and over again. In the program there is no announcement about meeting victims of sexual abuse ... I have nothing to announce as of yet."

Father Lombardi said the Pope had enjoyed yesterday's welcome ceremony, including the boat-a-cade and motorcade.

""The Holy Father is very happy and has had a very good impression of the arrival and the way it was organised on the water. It was a very grand welcome especially on the streets last night."
