GRAND RAPIDS — A former Portland priest accused of using the Internet to solicit a teen for sex was denied a plea deal that would have had his jail sentenced capped at one year.

Kent County Circuit Judge Mark Trusock said he would not accept the plea agreement reached in Rockford District Court, so the Rev. Shamaun Beas, 39, withdrew his guilty plea to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a girl younger than 13.

Beas served at Holy Family Catholic Church in Sparta in 2001. He later served at St. Patrick's in Portland in 2004, where he was nabbed in a state Attorney General's office bust of alleged child predators.

Beas already is serving a 5- to 20-year sentence on four other Internet sex convictions out of Macomb County.

Beas will return to Rockford District Court for a probable cause hearing.
