MAHANOY CITY, Pa. (AP) — Seven parishes are now one in the Diocese of Allentown.

Members of the former St. Fidelis, St. Canicus, Sacred Heart, Assumption BVM, St. Casimir and St. Joseph churches in Mahanoy City and the former Our Lady of Siluva, in Maizeville, have merged into the congregation of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. The union was celebrated with a symbolic ceremony Saturday at the former St. Joseph Church building.

The merger is the largest in the diocese, where a restructuring plan announced May 31 called for the closing of 32 churches.

Parishioners of St. Canicus, St. Casimir, St. Fidelis and Our Lady of Siluva have filed appeals asking the bishop of Allentown, to reconsider their closings.
