GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - Gallup's former Roman Catholic bishop admits it's hard to believe that injuries depicted in police photographs taken while he was in the hospital last year could have been caused by a fall at his home.

Donald Pelotte was taken to the hospital in July 2007 with heavy bruising across his chest, arms, knuckles, legs and feet. Physicians called police but the bishop told them he had fallen.

Pelotte, who now lives in Florida, was recently shown the police photos by Albuquerque television station KRQE.

He told the station that he doesn't remember what happened but that after looking at the photos, there's no way he could have gotten that damage by falling down the stairs.

KRQE received copies of the photographs after reaching a settlement with the city of Gallup.

The station had requested that the city release the photos under the state Inspection of Public Records Act, but the city sued, asking a judge to decide whether the photos were public record.
