KOLLAM (ICNS): Three members of Kerala State Women's Commission visited the house of the nun who committed suicide apparently to enquire about the allegations of convent authorities harassing the nuns.

Commission chairperson D. Sreedevi and members T. Devi and Meenakshi Thampan visited the house of deceased nun Anoopa Mary’s house in Kollam diocese’s Kanjiracode parish.

The nun’s father Pappachan had alleged in the media that his 23 year daughter hanged inside her convent on Aug.11 unable to suffer the sexual and mental harassment from convent superiors.

The commission members reportedly recorded the statements of Papachan, nun’s mother Bijiamma and other relatives in the house. In his statement Papachan said the nun was mentally tortured. He said his daughter was made to wash latrines and do menial jobs.

However, soon after the commission members left, Papachan reiterated his allegations of sexual harassment of his daughter. He told media stood by the allegation he had raised on Tuesday and that he would present proof of this at the appropriate time.

State president of Bharatiya Janata Party P.K. Krishnadas also called on Mr. Papachan and offered his condolences.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan announced on Wednesday that state Crime Branch would enquire into the suicide of the nun. The nun's family would be given Rs.2 lakh rupees, he said.
