ALBANY, N.Y. - A local priest accused of sex abuse has been permanently removed from the church. The Albany Catholic Diocese said it had reason to believe Reverend Gary Mercure, 60, sexually abused a minor more than 20 years ago.

Bishop Howard Hubbard said the allegations stem from Mercure's time as a priest at Saint Theresa of Avila in Albany.

Mercure also served in parishes in Troy, Latham, Glens Falls, and Queensbury. One group that provides assistance to church abuse victims is the Survivors' Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP.

"As a group SNAP has a Survivors Network, those abused by Priests. We were at first concerned about the allegations against Father Gary Mercure. We were contacted by over a dozen men who were abused by this man and our concern was that the diocese did not move quickly enough,” said Mark Lyman, Director of SNAP.

Mercure had been on administrative leave since the complaint was filed against him in January.
