BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory has testified that he didn't see documents detailing alleged sexual abuse by some priests while leading the Belleville Diocese.

Gregory testified Tuesday in a civil lawsuit that a former vicar general who's now deceased compiled the documents. He says the papers weren't filed properly.

James Wisniewski (wizh-NEW'-ski) of Champaign alleges in the lawsuit against the diocese that the Reverend Raymond Kownacki sexually molested him in the 1970s. A telephone number for Kownacki isn't listed.

Gregory says he didn't know of many complaints against Kownacki, who Gregory removed from the active ministry in 1995 but who isn't charged criminally.

Gregory was installed in Atlanta after leading the Belleville diocese for nearly 11 years.
