Green Bay's New Bishop

More with Green Bay's New Bishop

As Bishop Ricken is learning about the Green Bay diocese, members of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, are asking the new Catholic leader to step up and help in its battle.

Tuesday SNAP presented the diocese with a letter asking Bishop Ricken to take action on five requests with regard to allegations of sexual abuse in the diocese.

"I think it's important to families of survivors and survivors in Green Bay to understand that the bishop takes this seriously and cares about it and wants that known," SNAP's co-director in Green Bay, Alice Hodek, said.

In its request, the victims network wants action taken in the bishop's first 100 days as leader of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay.

SNAP officials hope to meet with Bishop Ricken at the end of those 100 days. They hope to have an open dialogue about the abuse issue.

"He's a member of the Bishops Committee on Sexual Abuse, so he's coming in as one of the experts on this problem. That makes us hopeful. We're hopeful as well because we feel we can all cooperate, turn a corner on the problem," SNAP Midwest Director Peter Isely said.

Bishop Ricken didn't say if he'll comply with the requests in the group's letter, but he indicated the issue of sexual abuse against children is one he takes very seriously.
