TONY EASTLEY: The principle of St Stanislaus' College says the school is co-operating with police investigations into paedophile activity.

John Edwards is speaking here with AMs David Mark.

JOHN EDWARDS: We have very limited information. What's taken place is that a search warrant was served on the school in early July that listed the names of a number of former students and the names of three former staff members. We've assisted police in their enquiries in this matter.

DAVID MARK: Can you tell me whether those other two staff members were teachers?

JOHN EDWARDS: Um, one of them was a former teacher at the school, and the other person worked in other capacities at the school.

DAVID MARK: A Sydney newspaper is reporting some details about the nature of these alleged crimes, they refer to late night orgies, do you have any information about the allegations?

JOHN EDWARDS: Some years ago I received some material over the internet, concerning material like you describe and I referred that matter to the police.

DAVID MARK: Do all these allegations relate to former staff and students? Is there any suggestion that any of these activities may be ongoing at the school?

JOHN EDWARDS: I am completely unaware of any suggestion that any such activities are continuing to take place at the school. As I understand it the matters referred to sit very firmly in the period of the middle 1980s, the period that I understand is in question is the period 1986.

There have been some suggestions by the media this morning it also relates to periods in the 1970s, I can only indicate what I've been informed of by the police through the warrant and that it related to the period 1986.

DAVID MARK: Mr Edwards had you received any information before this information that came to you on the internet regarding these sorts of allegations that these sort of activities took place at the school?

JOHN EDWARDS: Um, in relation to these matters I don't believe so. The reality is that whenever such things are put forward they need to be addressed and they need to be referred to relevant authorities.

DAVID MARK: How damaging is this to your school?

JOHN EDWARDS: I think it is damaging to the extent that it's a matter of grave concern that allegations of this type have been made. If indeed they have taken place, it's a totally repellent set of actions that have taken place at this school. It would be a cause of great concern that people have been harmed in those ways.

But the issue at point is, I think it is absolutely a requirement for this matter to be open, for this matter to be addressed and for this matter to be resolved.

This school is very concerned to ensure that children are treated well and their interests are protected. And I think if it's an open matter, anyone who has issues to come forward should bring them forward, it should be addressed comprehensively.
