Michael Mastromarino, 44, of Fort Lee, N.J., the alleged ringleader of the million-dollar scam to harvest diseased body parts of 244 Philadelphians, was expected to plead guilty today in Common Pleas Court to multiple counts of abuse of corpse, theft and related offenses.

The plea will come just days before jury selection is slated in the trial of two Philadelphia funeral-home operators, Louis and Gerald Garzone, who are accused of selling body tissue to Mastromarino, who in turn allegedly sold them to processors for transplants. Mastromarino already has pleaded guilty in New York to charges of enterprise corruption and body-stealing.

Accused priest defrocked

John Mulholland, a former Roman Catholic priest who was the subject of a charge of sexual abuse of a minor in 2005, has been granted his request to be removed from the priesthood.

The Philadelphia Archdiocese said that after the charge was received, Muhlolland's ministry was restricted. The Archdiocese investigated the accusation, which later was substantiated.

Mulholland served from May 1965 in these parishes: St. Patrick, Kennett Square; St. Joseph; Warrington; St. Anastasia, Newtown Square; Blessed Virgin Mary, Darby; Holy Child, Philadelphia; Stella Maris, Philadelphia; St. Francis of Assisi, Norristown; Immaculate Conception, Levittown, and St. Dominic, Philadelphia. He also served as chaplain of the Immaculate Mary Home, Philadelphia.

Guv: I won't veto toll raises

Gov. Jon Corzine says he won't stop the planned toll hike for four bridges over the Delaware.

Corzine has veto power over decisions by the Delaware River Port Authority, which operates the bridges, but says he won't exercise it in this case. The toll hikes will go into effect Sept. 14 for the Betsy Ross, Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman and Commodore Barry bridges. Drivers will pay $4, up from $3. The tolls will rise to $5 in two years.
