A Roman Catholic priest who was based in Massena has been indicted on sex charges by a Grand Jury in Montgomery County.

48-year-old Reverend John Broderick was indicted Tuesday on three felony counts of having sexual contact with children younger than 11. The indictment also accuses Broderick of unlawfully providing alcohol to the children.

Authorities say the children were abused in the Montgomery County town of Palatine between 2005 and 2007. The children who were allegedly abused range in age from 5 to 11.

The victims' parents told State Police that Broderick befriended their family and was considered their spiritual adviser. Broderick allegedly gave alcohol to the children and that "morphed" into sexual abuse.

Broderick left Montgomery County in May of 2007 and was associated with the Holy Name of Jesus Academy in Massena, where he was arrested in February.

Broderick was assigned to the Syracuse Diocese but his official duties were suspended earlier this year. A spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Diocese in Syracuse says the diocese had received no prior allegations involving Broderick.

Broderick was ordained in 1989 but has not been assigned to a local parish since 2004. His lawyer says they intend to fight the charges and exonerate the priest.
