SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - The principal of a prestigious Australian boarding school said Thursday that a man charged in connection with an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse at the school was ejected from the institution when he tried to attend an event for young Catholic pilgrims in July.

St. Stanislaus principal John Edwards said

the 66-year-old Catholic brother was told to leave by event organizers before the gathering began on July 9 after they found out he was a suspect in the investigation into alleged sexual abuse at the school during the 1970s and '80s.

The school was hosting a gathering for pilgrims who were in Australia for the Roman Catholic Church's World Youth Day festival in July.

The brother worked at St. Stanislaus' College until the early 1990s.

Pope Benedict XVI visited Australia in July as part of the massive Catholic youth festival and publicly condemned sexual predators in the church, apologizing to their victims.

On Wednesday, the man was charged with 28 child sex offenses related to the time he worked at the school. Police have not released his name, but Edwards said he had worked at St. Stanislaus for many years in various capacities _ and even served as its vice president.

A brother is not a priest but is usually a lay member of a religious order.

The suspect is one of four men _ including a priest and an ex-priest _ charged with more than 100 counts of abuse that allegedly occurred at St. Stanislaus and the Anglican All Saints College in Bathurst, 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Sydney.

All four have been released on bail and are due to appear in court later this year.
