At Holy Name Cathedral, advocacy group hands out fliers calling for discipline

Parishioners at Holy Name Cathedral on the city's Near North Side were handed fliers Sunday from members of an advocacy group that hopes to see archdiocese of Chicago leaders disciplined for their handling of sexual abuse claims.

The archdiocese agreed last month to pay $13 million to settle claims brought by 16 people who were abused by priests as children. As the Tribune had previously reported, the church also released documents, including a deposition taken from Cardinal Francis George, that call into question how church leaders handled certain abuse claims.

Rev. Edward Grace withheld information about abuse allegations against Rev. Daniel McCormack, who is now serving a 5-year prison sentence, before McCormack was promoted to a supervisory position, according to the cardinal's deposition. A letter of reprimand was placed in Grace's file.

The advocacy group, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, says the church should dole out harsher punishments to church leaders who protected accused priests.
