A Belmont Catholic Priest has been placed on restricted duties after year two students at a New South Wales Hunter region primary school were shown an explicit image during a special religious education class.

Father Gerard Mackie was a religious tutor at the state primary school when the incident happened last week.

The Department of Education has confirmed that an "inappropriate image" was shown to the year two students during one of Father Mackie's lessons.

The classroom teacher was in the room at the time and immediately removed the image from the screen. The school contacted police and notified parents by phone.

The seven-year-old students and school staff have been offered counselling by the department.

Father Mackie is no longer a tutor at the school and the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese says the priest will remain on restricted duties while the matter is investigated.
