SAN DIEGO—A lawyer for Roman Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse is asking a judge to postpone the release of his clients' confidential files to the court for two months.

Attorney Robert Jassoy says in court papers filed this week that he needs the time to ask a state appeals court to review the legality of the planned release. Jassoy represents priests from the Diocese of San Diego who are accused of sexual abuse.

That diocese and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reached separate multimillion dollar settlements with clergy abuse victims last year. Both agreements called for the church to turn over the private files to an independent judge for possible public release.

An attorney for alleged victims calls the request a "stall tactic."

Jassoy did not immediately return a call Tuesday.
