SAN DIEGO -- A lawyer for Roman Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse is asking a judge to postpone the release of his clients' confidential files to the court for two months.

Attorney Robert Jassoy says in court papers filed this week that he needs the time to ask a state appeals court to review the legality of the planned release. Jassoy represents priests from the Diocese of San Diego who are accused of sexual abuse.

That diocese and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reached separate multimillion dollar settlements with clergy abuse victims last year. Both agreements called for the church to turn over the private files to an independent judge for possible public release.

An attorney for victims calls the request a "stall tactic."

Jassoy did not return a call Tuesday.

But the National Outreach Director for a group representing priest abuse victims accuses church officials of exploiting victims further.

"Once again the diocese is exploiting legal technicalities to avoid revealing how much they knew and how little they did to protect children from sexual predators," says Barbara Dorris of SNAP. "Instead of spending parishioner’s money to protect their secrets they should be using their resources to offer support to victims and protect the innocent and the vulnerable."
