The founder and pastor of a prominent gospel church in Plainfield was arrested earlier today and charged with four counts of sexual assault on a minor less than 13-years old.

George Benbow, 56, was also charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor under the age of 16, according to Union County Prosecutor Ted Romankow.

A lengthy investigation revealed that the alleged abuse took place between 2000 and 2008 at multiple locations on the church grounds.

Benbow founded the Christian Fellowship Gospel Church in 1981. Today, the Johnston Avenue brick storefront church counts about 600 members.

Four years ago, he helped defeat a same sex union resolution in the City Council, arguing at the time that "marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman. My views come from a biblical perspective."

Benbow and his wife, Anita, who is also involved with the church, live in Plainfield and have been married for 32 years, according to the Christian Fellowship Gospel Church website. The couple have two children, George Jr., who is in the Air Force; and Michael, who is a musician with the church.
