  Former Church Publisher Tried for Embezzlement

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - The former head of a church-owned publisher in Poland has gone on trial on charges of embezzling some 67 million zlotys (US$30 million), money laundering and tax evasion.

The defendant_identified only as the Rev. Zbigniew B._led the Stella Maris publisher until 2002. The publisher is owned by the Roman Catholic diocese of Gdansk.

Gdansk court spokesman Rafal Terlecki said prosecutors on Thursday began reading out the indictment. The priest is charged with embezzling from 20 different companies, evading more than 10 million zlotys (US$4 million) in tax and money laundering between 1997 and 2001.

The priest could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. It was not immediately clear when a verdict could be expected.
