NEW YORK - An Upstate New York rabbi is accused of sexually abusing a female child more than a decade ago, federal authorities announced Monday.

In a story first reported on WNBC.com, FBI agents arrested Rabbi Israel Weingarten of the Sat Mar community at his Monsey home in Rockland County Monday morning .

Weingarten is accused sexual abuse and sodomy as well as traveling abroad with the victim so he could prey on her, according to a five-count federal indictment obtained by the U.S. Attorney's office in the Eastern District of New York .

The FBI has been investigating this case since the victim came forward in 2003, when she was an adult, saying that she had been sexually abused from the age of nine until 18, according to a memorandum from Benton Campbell, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District.

Weingarten pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Brooklyn federal court Monday where a judge ordered him held without bail. He could face life in prison if he is convicted .

The indictment accuses the rabbi of sexually abusing the girl in the spring and summer of 1997.
