NEW YORK (AP) — A rabbi in New York has been ordered held without bail on charges of sexually abusing a female relative for nearly a decade.

Rabbi Israel Weingarten pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn to five federal counts of sexual abuse.

The 58-year-old rabbi is accused of sexually abusing a girl beginning when she was 9 years old. Prosecutors say he abused the girl on a weeky and sometimes daily basis in Belgium, Israel and the United States. They say he moved her around to avoid being prosecuted.

Weingarten's attorney says the accusations against his client are a result of a bitter religious divorce from about three years ago.

Federal agents arrested Weingarten Monday morning after he barricaded himself in his Monsey home.
