A former minister from Hoover pleaded guilty to child abuse in Maryland, authorities said today.

Timothy Mann, who resigned as the Shades Crest Baptist Church music minister, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

He began serving seven years in a state penitentiary on Friday, with the rest to be served on probation, said Seth Zucker, a spokesman for Maryland's State's Attorneys Office.

Mann, 46, was arrested in Hoover earlier this year on charges that stemmed from inappropriate sexual acts with a female youth choir member at a Maryland church where Mann worked in the 1990s. The acts started in December 1992 when the girl was 14 and continued until summer 1996 at First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg, Md. Most of the incidents occurred in Mann's office at the church, authorities said.

Mann resigned from his job at Shades Crest Baptist Church and from his job as an adjunct music instructor at Samford University several days before his March 13 arrest.
