CHICAGO (AP) - A defense attorney for a defrocked Jesuit is trying to raise doubts about a witness who told a jury the priest demanded daily nude massages.

Defense attorney Stephen Komie (KOH'-mee) declined make an opening statement today on the first day of the federal criminal trial in Chicago of Donald McGuire.

Komie focused on cross-examination, asking the prosecution witness about a civil lawsuit he's filed against McGuire claiming $300,000 in damages.

The 78-year-old former priest is accused of traveling outside the U.S. and across state lines to have sex with a teenager between 2000 and 2003. He's pleaded not guilty.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Ruder says McGuire used his position as a priest to gain access to children.

The Vatican ordered McGuire out of the priesthood earlier this year.
