Two men who say they were molested as teens by the Rev. Donald McGuire testified Friday that the now-defrocked priest convinced them that they were "addicted" to masturbation and needed to be "educated" on how to stop it.

The "education" included looking at sexually explicit magazines such as Playboy and Playgirl and watching X-rated films.

One alleged victim, identified in federal court only as Dominick, now 22, said McGuire had him masturbate just short of climax.

McGuire, 78, a Chicago-based Jesuit priest for most of his career, is charged with taking children across state lines to abuse them.

Both alleged victims said McGuire asked them during confession about their sexual activities.

Dominick, now married and living in Rochester, N.Y., said he felt guilty about masturbating twice a week as a 13-year-old.

"It was new to me, and I was scared about it," said Dominick. "I was confused sexually. [I] didn't know if it was normal."

McGuire told the teen that "if I didn't master this, I would go to hell," said Dominick. "I felt like a freak."

McGuire's attorney, Stephen Komie, attempted to portray both alleged victims as motivated by potential cash awards in future civil lawsuits against McGuire and the Jesuit order.

Both men said that as teens, they had little or no contact with their biological fathers and were sent to McGuire by their mothers.

Dominick spent much of his youth in boarding schools. The tuition was covered by McGuire, who was his godfather and who baptized him as a baby. As a teen, Dominick spent school breaks and summers with McGuire, living in a Jesuit residence, Canisius House in Evanston, and traveling to retreats in other states and abroad.

Both alleged victims said McGuire had them give him massages that included rubbing his genitals. Dominick alleged that McGuire put oil on the boy's penis, examined it with a magnifying glass, and performed oral sex on him.

Dominick said he didn't tell anyone of the alleged abuse -- which he said took place from 1999 to 2003 -- because McGuire threatened to reveal his masturbation habits.

The other victim, Michael, 32, a fisherman who now lives in Catalina, Calif., said McGuire told him if he ever told anyone of the abuse, "they're not going to believe ... because he was religious. I was trapped, basically."

McGuire, who has diabetes and is confined to a wheelchair, could be seen muttering during testimony.

The jury trial continues next week.
