A catholic priest who served as an assistant pastor at the Sandusky St. Mary's parish in the 1960s has been placed on leave due to an allegation of sexual misconduct.

The Rev. Lawrence F. Varney, 75, also is barred from any public ministry, according to a news release from the diocese.

The alleged incident took place "almost 30 years ago" but was found to be credible, according to the statement.

Diocesan policy defines credible as "under all circumstances known at the time of a determination, a prudent person would conclude that there is a significant possibility that the incident occurred."

Varney served Sandusky St. Mary's from 1960 to 1964, coming to the parish after spending several months in a similar position at the St. Joseph's parish in Marblehead.

The diocese complied with Ohio law regarding reporting of the alleged misconduct, according to the statement. "The law has been followed in this case."

Varney served numerous parishes in the Toledo area after leaving St. Mary's. He retired in 2002.
