GRAND RAPIDS — A former Catholic priest who served at a Sparta church in 2001 was sentenced to 16 to 24 months in prison today for sexually molesting two girls six years ago.

Shamaun Beas, 39, already is serving six to 20 years in prison from a 2004 Internet sex sting in which police say he tried to solicit who he thought was a 14-year-old girl for sexual purposes.

Beas, a Pakistan native, stood before Kent County Circuit Court Judge Mark Trusock on Thursday for the 2002 molestation of two sisters. One was 17 when she testified earlier this year at a hearing.

Police alleged he groped the girls. He pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

"You now have 10 sex crimes," Trusock told Beas. "You are a sexual predator. As a Catholic priest, you are a disgrace. There is no excuse," he said.
