DAYTON — At a news conference held in Cincinnati today, Oct. 17, Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk announced that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed the Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr to succeed of Pilarczyk upon his retirement in August of 2009.

Schnurr, 60, will assist Pilarczyk and then succeed him upon Pilarczyk's retirement. Roman Catholic bishops are required to submit their resignation to the pope upon the age of 75, which Archbishop Pilarczyk will reach in August 2009.

Schnur is a cannon lawyer who was ordained in 1974. He organized the 1993 World Youth Day, which brought Pope John Paul ll to the United States. In a statement released by the office of the Archbishop of the Cincinnati Diocese, Pilarczyk applauded Schnurr's appointment.

"I hope that all the members of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati are as happy as I am about the appointment of Archbishop Dennis Schurr as coadjutor archbishop of our local church. Archbishop Schnurr will serve as helper to me until I retire and then will succeed me as Archbishop of Cincinnati.

I am grateful to our Holy Father for his kindness in providing for the needs of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in giving us a coadjutor. I wish Archbishop Schnurr many years of fruitful and joyous service in our midst. I know that the days of all of us will be bright because of his ministry here."

The Cincinnati archdiocese includes about 500,000 Catholics in 220 parishes.
