NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Some members of a Catholic church in New Orleans have filed a lawsuit over plans by the Archdiocese of New Orleans to close the church.

Several members of the congregation of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church said Monday they're suing the Archdiocese and Archbishop Alfred Hughes. Their lawsuit says that the congregation owns the church, not the Archdiocese; and that the church exceeds the benchmark number of families the Archdiocese set as it made plans to close and consolidate parishes.

A spokeswoman said the Archdiocese will not comment on pending legal matters. The Archdiocese has been working on a plan to consolidate churches to reflect population shifts and to address an expected shortage of priests.
