BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) — A former youth pastor has been charged with sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl.

Baker City Police arrested 34-year-old Dean B. Barnes at his home after he returned from a trip to Israel this week.

Police Chief Wyn Lohner said in a statement that Barnes and the girl had non-consensual sexual contact multiple times between March and August.

Lohner said the girl's parents came to police in July because Barnes had been continually calling and texting her. Police met with Barnes and asked him to stop.

Lohner says police gained information two weeks ago that led them to suspect sexual abuse, and arrested him after his return to the U.S.

Barnes was a youth pastor at a Baker City church until July, and he knows the alleged victim through that role.
