The case involving a Roman Catholic priest charged with sexually assaulting a young woman will be fast-tracked.

Rev. Patrick Robert Offin faces a single charge of sexual assault stemming from an incident that happened Aug. 21.

The 55-year-old — who is from Ghana, West Africa — was serving a two-month stint at Holy Cross parish in Holyrood when the incident allegedly occurred at the priest's residence.

When Offin's case was called in provincial court this morning, he wasn't there, but was represented by his lawyer Gerald O'Brien.

Crown prosecutor Nick Westera told Judge Robert Hyslop the Crown is electing to proceed summarily with the case, meaning it will be resolved quickly and will stay at the provincial court level. That also usually signifies a less severe penalty.

The case was scheduled to return to court Nov. 28.
