Tony Alamo will remain in federal custody while his case proceeds to trial, U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Bryant ordered today. Bryant ruled that Alamo, whose real name is Bernard LaZar Hoffman, presents a risk of flight and a threat to the safety of the public. Before ruling on Alamo's detention, Bryant listened to graphic testimony from a now 18-year-old former follower about being beaten at age 12 by alleged enforcer John Kolbeck at Alamo's direction. Alamo has been charged with violations of the Mann Act, based on allegations he transported a teen girl across state lines for sex. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyra Jenner told the court an arrest warrant currently exists for Kolbeck's arrest. As Alamo's detention hearing was in progress, Arkansas State Police conducted a search of the gymnasium at Tony Alamo Ministries' compound in Fouke, Ark. "We're executing a search warrant for possible evidence involved in a case we're working," said Lt. Glenn Sligh, commander of Company C C.I.D for the Arkansas State Police Wednesday morning. Sligh declined to specify what type of evidence they are seeking. The FBI Evidence Response Team is helping in the search.
