Two members of a Vinton church charged with molesting children (11/12) 1:40

Investigators tell News7 one man was an associate pastor, the other a deacon at Heritage Baptist Church in Vinton. But investigators point out that they don't think any of the abuse took place at the Vinton church.

Daniel Silverman was arrested in September. Vinton police say the 42-year-old associate pastor is charged with the aggravated sexual battery of a 12-year-old.

In Franklin County, Dean Harold Stone is charged with 24-counts of what the Commonwealth's Attorney calls "various sexual acts with minors." Charges include sodomy, and involve multiple victims.

Investigators tell News7 Stone was a deacon with the church.

The Pastor of Heritage Baptist doesn't believe anything criminal happened on church property because the organization makes sure parents and children are never separated.

"We think a lot of benefits to that. One of the benefits to that helps children with parents, lots of reasons, but so parents can lookout and care for and protect their children," said Pastor Bob Barton.

Investigators say Stone, who was the deacon, confessed to the crimes. On Wednesday morning, he appeared in a Franklin County courtroom. His trial is early next year. He is still in jail.

Meanwhile, Associate Pastor Silverman is out of jail. He is no longer a paid leader in the church.
