It involves an allegation against a priest in Schuyler County in the late 1990s.

An attorney in Elmira filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Rochester Catholic Diocese and Bishop Matthew Clark, on behalf of a young man who says he was molested by a Catholic Priest in the late 1990’s.

John Hayes claims Bishop Clark failed to protect his client, 21-year-old Jason Hartley, from molestation by Father David Bonin. The abuse allegedly happened from 1998 to 2001.

Father Bonin served as pastor of St. Mary of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen, and St. Benedict Church in Odessa, N.Y.

The Rochester Catholic Diocese said that the allegations were first brought to them in 2007, five years after Father David Bonin died.

The Diocese says they have informed parishioners of the alleged abuse, and have stressed safety in this area.

Since 2002, more than 23,000 clergy members and diocese volunteers have undergone a mandatory training course on creating a safe environment, and 33,000 youth have gone through a training course to raise their awareness of protecting themselves from sexual abuse.
