REDDING, Calif.—The former pastor of a Redding Pentecostal church has pleaded not guilty to nearly 50 counts of felony child molestation.

David Bishop had been pastor of the First United Pentecostal Church since the early 1970s.

A report from the Shasta County Sheriff's Department says the 65-year-old pastor admitted during a call with a social worker last January that he had fondled a child while she sat on his lap 25 years ago.

Charges were not able to be brought in that incident because the statute of limitations extends only to 1988.

Instead, Bishop faces 47 felony charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under the age of 14 stemming from the alleged molestation of two other girls over several years.

He is free on $100,000 bail until a preliminary hearing on Dec. 18.
