Augustine laid to rest

V V Augustine, former ASI, who had committed suicide a couple of days ago while the Sister Abhaya case was on intensified track at the instance of the latest CBI team, was laid to rest in the cemetery of St Mary’s Catholic Church at Ithithanam near here, around 4 pm on Thursday. The plainclothesmen of the CBI were present and the whole ceremony was videographed.

The relatives and well-wishers of Augustine, including a few former colleagues from the Police Department, took part in the ceremony. The local church Vicar administered the rites.

The body was brought to the Vazhekkattu house of the deceased around 9.30 am. Though the autopsy was undertaken on Wednesday and the body was released to the relatives, the funeral was delayed for a day to facilitate the arrival of the two sons of Augustine from Bahrain and New Delhi. The Chingavanam police have recorded the statement of Sebastian, son of the deceased and who is a constable attached to the Changanassery police station.

Augustine’s wife Achamma and other close relatives have also given statements to the local police. Meanwhile, the CBI made arrangements on its own on the sly to check the presence of notable mourners in the funeral ceremony of Augustine.
