BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A Roman Catholic diocese in southwestern Illinois has posted $5.9 million bond to cover a judgment awarded to a former altar boy who was sexually abused by a priest.

The bond posted Tuesday by the Diocese of Belleville includes the $5 million judgment and two years worth of daily interest in case a pending appeal fails.

In August, a jury found in favor of James Wisniewski of Champaign in his 2002 lawsuit alleging the Rev. Raymond Kownacki sexually abused him for five years in the 1970s beginning when he was 13.

The lawsuit also claimed the diocese concealed Kownacki's suspected behavior and quietly shuffled him among parishes without warning each site's parishioners.

The diocese has filed notice that they will appeal the jury's verdict.
