A FORMER priest was before Naas District Court last week on charges of indecent assault.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was a member of a religious order for many years. He is currently in receipt of an Old Age Pension. The court heard the accused was facing nine charges of indecent assault dating back to the early 1980s. The court heard the alleged victim was a child at the time and the alleged offences occured in the local parish.

Judge Desmond Zaidan granted bail on a bond of n2,000 on the condition that the accused reside in a monastery and have no contact with the alleged victim. Inspector Patsy Glennon told the court the identification of the former priest in the media would cause great distress to the victim.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a media restriction on naming the accused but noted that it may be lifted in the future. The case was adjourned until 9 February for the service of the Book of Evidence.
